NACADA intensifies crackdown on counterfeit alcohol in Nairobi

NACADA has arrested 11 people and seized large amounts of counterfeit alcohol during a 10-day operation in Nairobi County.

The authority said the operation was carried out between August 20 and 31 in response to public concern over fake, unsafe and illicit alcoholic products being made, distributed and sold in the country. The multi-agency exercise took place in Roysambu, Kasarani, Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Starehe, Lang’ata, Embakasi West and Kamukunji.

NACADA said Nairobi has been heavily affected by illegal alcohol and counterfeiting. The operation found fake KRA excise stamps, uncoded alcoholic products, expired drinks and other counterfeit products.

The authority is working with the Kenya Revenue Authority, Kenya Bureau of Standards, National Police Service and other agencies to verify the seized products and follow up on people linked to their manufacture, distribution and sale.

NACADA said the crackdown is not only aimed at individual outlets. It also targets the larger networks involved in the illegal alcohol trade.

The authority said it will continue to work with other agencies, educate the public and engage stakeholders to protect the health and wellbeing of Kenyans.
