Russian strikes kill 12 in Kyiv and surrounding region

At least 12 people were killed and 20 others injured in overnight Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and nearby areas, Ukrainian officials said.

Two children were among those injured. Six railway workers from the state company Ukrzaliznytsia were killed after a depot in Kyiv was hit. Eight people died in Kyiv, where fires were reported in three districts. Four others were killed in Boryspil after a residential building was struck.

Russia said its attack was aimed at Ukrainian military and energy facilities. It described the operation as a “massive strike using high-precision weapons”. Russian authorities also said one person was killed in Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod, in western Russia.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said nearly 350 rescue workers were deployed overnight in Kyiv and the surrounding region. He said Russia used a “significant number of jet drones and ballistic missiles”.

Eight other Ukrainian regions were also attacked, according to Zelensky. He said an Indian national was among those affected.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivsky later said the Indian man was killed in Boryspil on his 26th birthday.

The attacks came a day after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war during a security summit in Kyrgyzstan. “Every day spent in war pushes humanity back, and every step taken towards peace fills humanity with new hope and enthusiasm,” Modi said at a security summit in Kyrgyzstan.

The latest strikes marked the sixth day of sustained Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv. Russia had warned over the weekend that it was preparing “massive” attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.

On Friday, Russian strikes on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region killed 38 people and caused shells, mines and drones to explode.

In a separate incident, a drone attack caused a fire at the Russian Baltic Sea port of Ust-Luga, according to Leningrad regional Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko. Ukraine says the port is a legitimate target because it handles petroleum products that help finance Moscow’s war effort.
